Shenzhen's Energy Storage Products See Sustained Global Export Growth for Years, Leading Global Green Transition

As a global hub for new energy innovation and manufacturing, Shenzhen has witnessed remarkable and sustained growth in the global exports of its energy storage products over the past years. Fueled by a complete industrial chain, cutting-edge technological innovations, and strong policy support, Shenzhen's energy storage industry has firmly established its leading position in the global market, with its products being shipped to major regions around the world and becoming a key driver of the global green energy transition.
The export growth of Shenzhen's energy storage products has shown a steady upward trend for consecutive years, outperforming many other industrial sectors. Data shows that the output value of Shenzhen's electrochemical energy storage industry reached 267 billion yuan in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 18.4%, and maintained strong growth momentum in the following years—with the output value from January to May 2023 reaching 118 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 24.7% <superscript>3. As a major gathering place for energy storage product exports in China, Shenzhen's lithium batteries, a core component of energy storage systems, have achieved booming production and sales, becoming a key part of the city's high-growth "new three" export categories alongside new energy vehicles and photovoltaic products <superscript>4. Industry insiders revealed that the export volume of Shenzhen's energy storage products has maintained a double-digit year-on-year growth rate for more than five years, with portable energy storage products alone accounting for 37.7% of the global market share, and grid-side energy storage system integration accounting for 12.9% of the global market <superscript>2.
The sustained export growth is underpinned by Shenzhen's comprehensive and competitive industrial chain. The city has fully laid out key links in the energy storage industry, including battery materials, battery cells and modules, control systems, and system integration <superscript>2. Among them, the global market share of four major lithium battery materials exceeds 20%, forming a complete industrial ecosystem from upstream raw materials to downstream application services <superscript>2. A number of leading enterprises have emerged as main forces driving export growth. Industry giants such as BYD, Sunwoda, and Huawei Digital Energy, as well as specialized and sophisticated enterprises focusing on household energy storage scenarios such as Jackery, EcoFlow, and德兰明海 (Delanminghai), have continuously expanded their global market reach<superscript>2. For example, BYD's energy storage system products are widely used in large-scale energy storage projects around the world, while Jackery's portable energy storage products have become popular in overseas consumer markets, favored by outdoor enthusiasts and users in areas with unstable power supply.
Technological innovation is the core driver behind the long-term export competitiveness of Shenzhen's energy storage products. Local enterprises and research institutions have focused on R&D in key areas such as long-life, high-safety battery systems and large-scale, high-efficiency energy storage systems <superscript>1. They have also actively explored next-generation reserve technologies, with breakthroughs in battery management systems (BMS), energy management systems (EMS), and energy storage converters (PCS) <superscript>3. These technological advantages have enabled Shenzhen's energy storage products to stand out in the global market, meeting the diverse needs of different regions for energy storage solutions, from large-scale grid-connected energy storage projects to household portable energy storage devices.
Strong policy support from the Shenzhen government has provided a solid guarantee for the sustained export growth of the energy storage industry. The city has issued a series of policies, including the "Several Measures to Support the Accelerated Development of the Electrochemical Energy Storage Industry" and the "Action Plan for the Development of the Electrochemical Energy Storage Industry (2023-2025)", focusing on building four major centers: an advanced energy storage headquarters R&D center, a high-end intelligent manufacturing center, a multi-scenario demonstration and verification center, and a global high-quality energy storage product and solution supply center<superscript>1<superscript>2. To promote global development, the government has also supported enterprises in obtaining overseas market access certifications, improved the dangerous goods transportation capacity of Xiaomo International Logistics Port, and optimized the supporting infrastructure of major ports to enhance the level of electrochemical energy storage maritime transportation <superscript>1. In addition, financial support measures such as special funds and green finance have further broadened the financing channels for enterprises, helping them expand their overseas markets <superscript>1.
The growing global demand for green energy has created huge market space for Shenzhen's energy storage products. With the acceleration of the global "dual carbon" process, countries around the world are vigorously developing renewable energy such as photovoltaic and wind power, and the demand for energy storage systems to solve the instability and intermittency of renewable energy power generation is surging <superscript>3. Shenzhen's energy storage products are particularly popular in regions such as Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, where there is a strong demand for off-grid energy storage solutions due to underdeveloped power grids or the urgent need for energy structure transformation <superscript>2. Many local enterprises have customized energy storage solutions according to local climate and market conditions to enhance product adaptability, further expanding their global market share.
Looking ahead, Shenzhen's energy storage industry is poised to maintain its sustained export growth momentum. With the continuous advancement of industrial upgrading and technological innovation, and the further optimization of policy and market environments, Shenzhen's energy storage products will continue to play an important role in the global energy transition. As Li Baohua, Secretary-General of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Shenzhen) Electrochemical Energy Storage Industry Alliance, noted, Shenzhen's energy storage industry has formed unique competitive advantages, and its continuous export growth will not only boost the city's economic development but also contribute more to the global goal of carbon neutrality.
